International film festival 'Vienna Shorts 2022' happens as hybrid event from 25 until 30 May with focus on cinema screenings and industry meetings

The international film festival 'Vienna Shorts' is an annual meeting point for independent filmmakers and a qualifying event for the Austrian Film Awards, the British Film Awards BAFTA, the European Film Awards and the Oscars®. In 2022, around 360 short films from 70 countries will be presented in cinemas and online. After two mainly digital years, the 19th edition of the film festival will focus in 2022 from 25 to 30 May on cinema screenings and meetings of professionals such as on 27 May at the 'New Connections: Meet The Industry' event where filmmakers and representatives from festivals like the Tribeca Film Festival or the London Short Film Festival and distribution agencies will meet at the Österreichisches Filmmuseum, one of the festival's venues.

The cinema programme is structured after topics such as 'Those Girls Are On Fire'. The title stands as an announcement of five films about women which will be shown on 28 May at the Stadtkino im Künstlerhaus.

The festival opening on 25 May at the Gartenbaukino will be accompanied by presenter Neil Young, film critic (The Hollywood Reporter, Sight & Sound, Tribune) and Head of Selection of the Austrian Competition, and Veronica Kaup-Hasler, Vienna's Executive City Councillor for Culture and Science.

For the first time in the history of the festival, the programme was divided into three segments: Around 130 films can be experienced exclusively in cinemas between May 25 and 30, while another 130 films have been curated exclusively for the festival's digital film portal. In addition, the 94 competition films can be seen first in theaters and after the awards ceremony on 30 May online.
