Preview festival Steirischer Herbst '23 under the theme 'Humans and Demons': Michael Portnoy's performance 'The Society of Societies (A Room with New Rules)' about rules and adaptation
After the summer, one of the most interesting places to see theater and performance premieres is the Steirischer Herbst in Graz, Styria. Since 1968, the multidisciplinary festival has been known for bringing social and political issues to the stage and exhibition spaces. This year's festival, titled 'Humans and Demons,' will run from September 21 to October 15. According to the introduction on https://www.steirischerherbst.at/, the "56th edition of steirischer herbst festival turns to character-based storytelling to show how people navigate today's moral gray zones and deal with the demons surrounding them."
Fashion.at looked through the festival program to find out how the theme will be communicated. There is one artist whose name already appears in the opening day program and who caught Fashion.at's attention with the topic 'rules of behavior'. The work of New York-based performance artist Michael Portnoy, which has been shown at The Kitchen in New York, the Palais de Tokyo in Paris or at the Documenta 13 in Kassel, resembles the medieval prankster Till Eulenspiegel, who holds a mirror up to the audience and involves them in a story with wisdom.
At the festival's opening on 21 September, Michael Portnoy is one of the artists who will give a foretaste of this year's theme. His work will take a critical look at rules. It's announced that he will inaugurate the 'director of behavior'. On 22 and 23 September, the audience of Michael Portnoy's performance 'The Society of Societies (A Room with New Rules)', commissioned and produced by steirischer herbst '23, can experience a new set of rules concerning speech, behavior, roles and the production of meaning "through carnivalesque interactions," as announced on https://www.steirischerherbst.at/en/program/artists/5170/michael-portnoy.
