Tech-savvy haute couture designer Flora Miranda presents her book 'I Am Digital' at the opening of her exhibition at the (Con)Temporary Fashion Showcase at the MAK Geymüllerschlössel in Vienna

The (Con)Temporary Fashion Showcase was founded last year at the MAK - Museum of Applied Arts in the garden palace Geymüllerschlüssel. The exhibition series provides an overview of the diverse approaches of Austrian or Austrian-based designers who use fashion to communicate social issues such as technological challenges. Flora Miranda, winner of the prestigious Austrian 'Outstanding Artist Award - Experimentelles Modedesign', is the next artist whose work will be exhibited at the Geymüllerschlössel. The show will be on view from 2 September until 3 December.

The visionary fashion designer, who was born in Salzburg and lives in Vienna and Antwerp, studied at the Fashion Academy in Antwerp, graduated in 2014 and worked for Iris van Herpen until she founded her own label in 2016. The designs for the futuristic haute couture are characterized by AI and digitality. Flora Miranda uses new technologies such as 3D scanning and printing and incorporates data from the future wearers disclosed on the internet into her couture creations. Miranda explores the performativity of the female gender through hyper-feminine clothing, addressing critical aspects of beauty norms and female identity. It's announced that the video LaLaLand from 2019, which explores the potential of AI for the creative process, will be screened at the exhibition. For this work, Miranda programmed an algorithm with a focus on 'sexual attractiveness' that 'designs' itself based on 50 3D scans.

Another piece that is particularly emphasized in the press release is the Crinkle Dress (2020) from the Cyber Crack collection. The dress was developed by Miranda in collaboration with the artist Esther Stocker. The Crinkle Dress' grid is meant to be a metaphor for the interconnectedness of the Internet, allowing for a kind of camouflage or invisibility. Recently, Flora Miranda posted pictures of the dress on Instagram with the information that it has been selected for the exhibition 'I.M Possible' at MK&G Hamburg. (Fashion.at recently published an article about the exhibition). The (Con)Temporary Fashion Showcase at MAK Geymüllerschlössel also includes the designer's stage costumes.

On the occasion of the opening of the exhibition on 2 September at the Geymüllerschlössel, Flora Miranda will present her book 'I Am Digital', published in 2023. The book features a cross-section of her work with texts by the designer and collaboration partners such as music producer and DJ Alec Empire. Looks from the book can be seen in the exhibition at the Geymüllerschlössel. The main topic of the publication is fashion-related identity construction in the digital age.
